Artificial Running Track
 

Bright blue finish.

Prior to a major international athletics event at Scotstoun Showground in Glasgow the organisers needed the artificial running track brought back to its original standard of cleanliness. Many years of use had left the surface deeply engrained with dirt and the colour had faded from a light blue to a dark grey. They used a Harben DTB 4012 trailer unit operating at 4000 psi (280 bar) and 12 gpm (55 L/m) to power a standard Hoverclean floor cleaner. The Hoverclean “hovers” just above the track surface whilst a high pressure jet bar and fan rotate under the orange fibreglass cover. One quick pass was enough to blast the track clean and leave it with a bright blue finish.

Artificial Ski Slope
 

This synthetic surface used for skiing and snowboarding turned from pristine white to an unattractive green colour thanks to algae growth.

The manufacturer & installer of this artificial ski slope surface approached Flowplant to see if they could rectify the problem of algae growth on their ski slopes. Trials using a Harben DTB trailer unit (4000 psi @12 gpm) powering a ‘Hoverclean’ floor cleaner proved extremely successful. The unit was fitted with 300ft (90m) of high pressure hose allowing it to be sited at the base of the slope whilst cleaning took place. Contracts nationwide are now being carried out using this system

Century Blast Cabinet
 

Bareshaft pumps or complete systems designed.

In this system the Harben Century pump is mounted in the ES type frame which is fitted with a selector valve and water header tank. It is driven by a 75Kw (100hp) 3 phase electric motor and is capable of delivering high pressure water to the blast cabinet at 700 bar (10,000 psi) and 54 l/min (12 gpm). The water jet is controlled by a Harben Century foot control valve which gives a completely dry shut off in the event that the pedal is released. A gimbal mounted lance allows the jet to be directed at the work piece which in this case will be ceramic coated investment castings. Flowplant can supply bareshaft pumps or complete systems designed to meet customers specific requirements. 

Grout Pumping Lines
 

A-Frame.

A UK based company had been contracted to stabilise the huge chasms that our ancestors had left after mining the limestone used to build local housing. In places the roof of the mine was only 2 metres below ground level and Edwardian houses had been built directly above.

The problem was solved by pumping aerated concrete up to 600 metres from a surface batching plant through 75mm high density polyethylene pipes. The concrete fills the large caverns and provides the structural strength to support the mine roof and the buildings above, removing the threat of future subsidence.


To keep the concrete flowing smoothly the lines needed to be jetted on a regular basis and a Flowplant electric 5008A unit using the Harben P type pump provided the necessary cleaning power. Operating at 5000 psi (350 bar and 8 gpm (36 lpm) with a set of Standard and High efficiency drain jets the machine was able to clean twisting lengths of pipe for distances up to 100m from the entry point. The addition of Harbens unique Jump Jet kit to vibrate the high pressure jetting hose meant that the machine could easily out perform more traditional jetting systems that use old style plunger pumps.

High Pressure Water Hydraulics System
 

Water Hydraulics.

This bank of eight Harben 8 cylinder 22mm P type radial piston diaphragm pumps are operating on a solution of 95% water / 5% oil at pressures up to 200 bar (3,000 psi) and flows of 54 l/min (12 gpm) each. In this case they are being used to hydraulically raise and lower a temperature probe in a steel vat at a steel production mill. The use of a 95/5 solution in high pressure hydraulics greatly reduces the risk of fire in the event of hose or pump failure. The Harben radial diaphragm design is ideally suited to the extremely harsh conditions encountered within such an environment.

Investment Casting Cleaning

Before. The casting material left after the investment casting process has been used is notoriously difficult to remove. There is also the added hazard that any removal process could damage the delicate castings leading to high scrap rates. In this particular application a Harben 6 cylinder 20mm  P type pumps is being driven by a 22.5Kw (30 hp) motor to blast water at 350 bar (5,000 psi) and 27 l/min (6 gpm) removing casting material without causing any damage to the delicate casting. Mill Scale Removal

The principal of thermal shock is being used here to remove mill scale from hot rolled steel billets as they leave the furnace. The ring type manifold is supplied with high pressure water from a Harben Century 8.27.5019 pump driven by a 75Kw (100hp) electric motor. The Century is delivering 210 bar (3,000 psi) at 155 l/min (34 gpm) through tungsten carbide fan nozzles and the combination of high pressure and cold water is stripping red hot mill scale at an incredible rate. For larger billets and higher workrates several Century pumps can be operated together delivering into a common high pressure manifold. The Centurys ability to run on poor quality water makes it an ideal choice for descaling applications.

Tunnel Boring Grout Lines
 

When a large construction consortium ran into problems with blocked grout lines on their tunnelling machine they called on Flowplants experience with water jetting applications to help find a solution.  The huge tunnel boring machine used grout, that had to be pumped through 50mm (2”) lines, to stabilise the newly placed reinforcing rings. When these grout lines blocked the whole operation came to a halt.

Two Harben 4008S type units were first trialled to see if they had enough power to blast the small bore lines clear. With 4000 psi and 8 gpm (275 bar/36 lpm) using a 5mm (3/16”) Micro Mini Jet the line was cleared sufficiently for a larger 6.5mm (1/4”) Mini Jet Kit to finish the job. The two units were permanently mounted onto the tunnelling machine where they worked to keep the grout lines clear until the whole project was completed.

The Harben P type pumps replaced two high pressure plunger pumps that had failed very quickly because of the poor quality supply water. Harben pumps are able to pump water that is filtered to only 50 microns making them ideally suited to harsh conditions.
