Training Locations & Availability

Where do you offer WJA training?

We run regular open courses from our Salisbury and Rotherham training centres, covering the South and Midlands/North respectively. We can also deliver training at customer sites across the UK and internationally — ideal for keeping your operators in the field.

How often do you run the courses?

We hold frequent open courses at both sites. You can view upcoming dates online, or if nothing suits, contact our team and we’ll do our best to arrange a dedicated session for you.

Can you deliver training internationally?

Yes — we’ve delivered courses worldwide and can organise international training on request.

Courses & Requirements

What courses are available?

We deliver the full range of WJA-approved courses, including:

  • Safety Awareness
  • Drain & Sewer
  • Surface Preparation
  • Pressure Washing
  • Tube & Pipe Cleaning

Safety Awareness is a mandatory first module, taking a full day to complete the practical modules are usually undertaken the following day. You will need to allow for 2 full days to complete the safety awareness and a given module.

How long do the courses take?

Each module typically takes a day (Minimum 6 hours). Safety Awareness and a practical module can NOT be combined into a single day’s training.

What are the course requirements?

  • Candidates must be 18 or over (or 16+ if employed and enrolled on a structured training programme).
  • All delegates must bring the required PPE as outlined in the joining instructions.
No PPE will result in you having to redo the module
  • No previous experience is necessary — just a willingness to learn.

Do I need to bring any tools or equipment?

No — all equipment is provided.

What PPE do I need to bring?

For the practical SP module, you must bring suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which includes:

  • Safety boots and waterproof clothing.
  • Hard hat (often with an impact visor).
  • Gloves and hearing protection.
  • Waterproof body suit

Visit our shop to view our range and order your equipment.

Do you support learners with additional needs?

Yes — we can make reasonable adjustments for delegates with learning or access needs. Please let us know in advance so we can accommodate you.

What is the WJA Refresher course?

Water Jetting Association courses give operatives a firm foundation for delivering safe water jetting services to a recognised and uniform standard. You are required to maintain that standard throughout your career with a 3-yearly refresher course. You have 3 months before and 3 months after expiry to refresh their jetting card.

About the Modules and Courses

What is the WJA Safety Awareness course?

It’s a mandatory, one-day theory-based course providing the foundation for understanding water jetting hazards, legislation (such as the Health & Safety at Work Act), and the WJA Codes of Practice. You must pass this course before you can take any practical modules to gain operational status.

What is the focus of the Surface Preparation (SP) module?

While the Safety Awareness course covers general hazards, the SP module focuses specifically on using high-pressure (HP) and ultra-high pressure (UHP) water jets to remove coatings, rust, and debris from surfaces like metal (ship hulls, tanks) and concrete (bridges, flooring).

What is the focus of the Drain, Sewer and Gun (DSG) module?

The DSG module is a one-day course (minimum 6 hours) specifically for operatives using high-pressure water jetting equipment in drainage systems, including the use of handheld jetting guns. It combines classroom theory with hands-on assessment using live equipment (typically at pressures not exceeding  350 bar / 5,000psi).

Do I need Safety Awareness for WJA pressure washing?

No. While all other modules (Drain, Sewer & Gun, Surface Preparation, etc.) require the Safety Awareness (SA) course as a prerequisite, the WJA Pressure Washing (PW) module is a standalone course. You can take it without having first passed the SA module first.

What is the PSI limit for WJA pressure washing courses?

The WJA Pressure Washing course is specifically designed for lower-powered machines. It covers equipment operating up to 200 bar (approx. 3,000 psi). If you are using equipment above this pressure, you are typically required to take the full Safety Awareness course plus a specific module like Surface Preparation.

Is there a practical test for WJA pressure washing?

Yes. The course is a 1-day program that combines classroom theory with hands-on practical assessment. You must demonstrate that you can set up the equipment, use it safely, and shut it down according to the WJA Code of Practice. You must also pass a 20-question multiple-choice test with a score of 80% or more.

Certification & Compliance

What qualification will I receive?

Courses are accredited by City & Guilds. Successful delegates receive a WJA Course certificate which is valid for 3 years (certificates and ID card are sent electronically, with hard copies of both being available for an additional cost). To keep your certification valid, you’ll need to complete a 1-day refresher course before your certificate expiry date. If you miss this, you will need to retake Safety Awareness and any expired modules.

How do I renew my qualification?

To renew, you must attend a one-day Safety Awareness Refresher course (also called a recap) and have a practical module already on your card. This must be done before your current certificate expires (WJA typically allows a window of 3 months before to 3 months after the expiry date).

How do I access my certificates?

WJA has moved to a digital system. Once you pass, you can access digital certificates and your operational jetting card via the WJA App. Hard copies are available upon request for an additional fee.

Is WJA training a legal requirement?

While not legally required, WJA certification is often mandated by insurers, principal contractors, and HSE policies. It’s widely recognised as the industry standard for safe water jetting practices.

What is a WJA Medical Card?

Even low pressure (100 psi+) can cause a life-threatening water injection injury, so you should carry a WJA Medical Card. This card alerts hospital staff that the injury is a surgical emergency, even if the skin entry point looks minor.

How long does the WJA card last?

The certification and ID card are valid for 3 years.

How is the course assessed?

Safety Awareness: A multiple-choice digital assessment (often using the CLiKAPAD system). The pass mark is 80%.

Modules: A balance of classroom theory and a practical assessment where you must demonstrate the safe setting up and operation of jetting equipment and guns. The pass mark is 80%.
